Chez Bonnin is situated in the very south of the Charente department on the Charente, Dordogne and Charente Maritime border in the region of Nouvelle Aquitaine.  The region boasts a micro-climate with long sunshine hours second only to those of Provence. The countryside is a mix of crops, vines, walnut groves and woods over gentle rolling hills. Winters are generally mild and short.

The nearest town of Chalais is centrally placed to the major centres of Angouleme the Departmental city (50kms, 45 min drive), Cognac (60kms, 1 hours drive), Bordeaux (90kms 1h20 mins drive), Perigeux (70km, 1 hour drive), Bergerac (80kms, 1h20 min drive), Libourne (50kms, 40 min drive). Trains run to Angouleme and Bordeaux from Chalais station. The smaller towns of Barbezieux (7 kms 15mins drive), Riberac and Coutras (30 min drive) and Coutras also has a main train station with trains to Bordeaux and then TGV to Paris. An hour and a half's drive passed endless fields of vines you reach the Atlantic coast.  Royan, Mechers, St. George Didone all have long sandy beaches and delicious seafood.

There are some lovely villages in the locality within a 10-15 minute drive of Chez Bonnin. St. Aulaye has lovely walks around the village and river and has a river beach and cafe often with live music in the summer. Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is a tourist attraction as one of the prettiest villages in France and has a monolithic church, many restaurants, tourist shops and a river beach. Brossac has a lake beach, club house providing live entertainment and restaurant overlooking the lake. The various restaurants and activites are too numerous to mention but to mention a few: there is canoeing, fishing, horse riding, archery, flying lessons at the local airport, many villages have cinemas and of course many many local fetes and spectacles during the summer months as well as lots of historical sites to visit. A little further afield is the beautiful, medieval town of St. Emillion (50kms, 45 min drive) and well worth a visit.
